Create New File

Subtitle: Create an income and expenditure file | Set up your budget planner

A new balance creates a separate MyMicroBalance file for your budget. The file stores your income, expenditures, accounts, categories, and settings and uses the file extension .mmb.

A balance file can contain multiple accounts and data from more than one year. You can move the file to another computer and create your own backup copies, for example on an external drive.

Create a new balance file on your PC

  1. Start MyMicroBalance.
  2. Select the upper tile in the start window. If MyMicroBalance is already open, select File and then New.
  3. Select the currency for your balance, for example Euro.
  4. Select Next.

Set password protection

In the next step, choose whether you want to protect the balance file with a password. Yes (recommended) is selected by default. Select No if you do not want to use a password.

Password rules

  • The password can contain a maximum of 10 characters.
  • Enter the password twice so that typing errors are detected immediately.
  • MyMicroBalance displays a strength indicator under How secure is your password?.
  • Do not use an easily guessed password such as a name, date of birth, or simple number sequence.
  • Keep the password in a secure place. If you forget the password for a balance file, the MyMicroBalance Support Team cannot centrally decrypt or restore the file.

Choose a storage location

  1. Select Next.
  2. In the Windows Save As dialog, choose a storage location and a clear file name.
  3. Select Save.

MyMicroBalance creates the file with the extension .mmb. Save it in a location that you can easily find again, such as a dedicated Documents folder for your household budget.

Enter the opening balance

A new balance starts at 0.00. If you want to begin with an existing account balance, record the opening balance as the first income or expenditure. This ensures that the balance in MyMicroBalance matches your actual starting amount.

Alternatively, open the Account menu and use the Opening Balance function to enter the starting amount and align the balance with a bank account.

Storage tips

  • Store the file in a location that you can easily find again.
  • Do not leave the file in a temporary download folder.
  • Create regular backups, especially before making major changes.
